Memorial plaque to mountan guides in Trenta
It is built into a rock by the road below the botanical garden of Juliana and was dedicated in 1957 by the Planinska zveza Slovenije to the renowned Trenta mountain guides, the pioneers of Slovene mountain exploration and alpinism. The Trenta hunters and shepherds became famous mountain guides in the second half of the past century, particularly in the period of the exploration of the Julian Alps. Kugy, who is credited as the father of the exploration of Trenta and Trenta mountains, appreciated very much their natural skill of movement over difficult mountainsterrain, their tenacity, toughness, fearlessness and good-heartedness. Many a summit and wall is closely connected with famous names that are Trenta's own. Accompanied by Andrej Komac-Mota, Kugy succeeded in conquering for the first time ever the summit of Škrlatica (in 1880) and Ivan Berginc scaled the eastern part of Triglav's North wall as early as 1890. And just as famous are the feats of Jože Komac, Anton Kravanja, father and son Tožbar, as wall as other, humble guides and trailblazers of daring mountain trails.
