Monument to Julius Kugy

It stands by the road climbing over the Vršič pass. The monument is the work of sculptor Jakob Savinšek and was erected by Planinska zveza Slovenije (Slovene Alpine Society) on its 60th anniversary. Dr. Julius Kugy (1858 - 1944) belongs among the greatest admirer of the Julian alps. With the aid of local mountain guides, he was the first conqueror of many a pinnacle of Julian Alps and he climbed many of them by a new route. His books eulogize the beauties of mountain realm and in an artistic way express his good will towards the people who live in the mountains and his love of the secret little values. Thus he built a permanent monument to the Julian Alps and to the people of Trenta.
