TRENTA
SOČA NATURE TRAIL
This educational trail - the Soča Trail - runs from the spring of the river Soča in the high Alps, to the lower end of the valley. It is intended to provide a presentation of the Soča Valley´s natural curiosities, as well as the rich heritage which lies within. The basic idea behind creating and equipping the trail, which joins together a number of the old Trenta drovers routes, is to present an array of important natural as well as man-made features which form the wealth of this beatiful valley.
Organised tours along the trail, guided by locals employed by the Triglav National Park Authority, are intended to bring visitors closer to the pace of life in the valley, as well as draw their attention to the priceless heritage which lies within this, Slovenia´s only, national park.
Guided tours begin from the unique Karstic spring of the Soča - "Pod Šnito" - under the slopes of Suhi Vrh. The view of the Zadnja Trenta Valley, Zapouden and the neighbouring peaks, remind one of this areas mining past as well as its very first settlers. Below the Alpine lodge at the spring, an information board directs one off the main road and onto the Soča Trail. Here the lively rumble of the Soča accompanies hikers as they learn about the forests and forestry, the consequences of various geological eras, as well as Trenta´s traditional architecture.
At the "Na Turi" monument to Dr. Julius Kugy, the character of this great Triestino mountaineer is portrayed, and his popular and respected guided books are presented. Next along the way are narrow and deeply carved ravines of the Mlinarica Gorgre, followed by Slovenia´s first Alpine botanic gardens - Alpinum Juliana. These gardens, now over 70 years old, contain some 900 examples of Alpine flora. A stones-throw away is the fascinating St. Mary´s Church, as well as a former administrative building of the mines, togheter with the homestead of the very first Trentan guide, Anton Tožbar - Špik. Crossing the renovated wooden Špik footbridge, one continues the tour along the right bank of the river. A little further downstream is a cemetery containing the remains of Russian WW I. prisoners who as forced labourers died navigating the road through the Vršič Pass.
Located in the hamlet of Na Logu, the first settlement of any size in the valley, is Trenta Lodge, central information point of the Triglav National Park and home to the Trenta museum collection. Guided tours of this museum will confirm many an impression gathered along the way. The Soča Trail continues down the Trenta Valley, and is laid out and mainained as far as the Matevž farmstead, Trenta 1; as yet, however, it is not equipped and marked along its entire length.
Guided tours along the Soča Trail are organised every Thursday in July and August. They leave from the Lodge at the Soča Spring at 9.00 a.m. Other guided tours, in English, German and Italian, are also possible by prior arrangement. In addition the described itinerary, there is also the opportunity to take guided tours into the high mountains of the Triglav National Park, as well as the possibility of overnight stays in the mountain huts and lodges.
